STATISTICS

Character Name: Nathaniel (Nate) Milo Atticus Hawthorne
Character Canon: Original
Character Age: Chronologically 27. Physically 22, mentally somewhere around 35-40.
Canon Point: Early 2029, shortly after Nate moves home to Hawthorne Manor.
Link to History: Link | CW: references to torture, trauma.
Skills: He can make jewellery. He's a decent amateur artist, and excellent tattoo artist. He knows how to body-pierce safely. He can cook, and likes baking in particular. He was taught the basics of playing piano, tennis, rowing and cricket as a child; he dropped the sports as soon as he was able, but taught himself to play guitar reasonably well. He's conversational in French, even without magical help, though he does augment many of his skills with magic.
Abilities: Nate is a witch! In his world, magic is accessible in different ways; there is magic through herbalism, which anyone with enough knowledge and experience can access, and there is magic that comes from an innate connection to spiritual energy. Nate comes from a long line of Hawthorne witches, whose innate connection to magic, and obsession with continuing that legacy through marriage, has made them an exceptionally powerful family. Because of this, Nate has a considerable amount of natural talent for magic, which he has furthered with his own obsessive study of his art.

The magic of his world is separated into seven different schools, into which various spells are categorised. There are common spells written down in family grimoires, which can be memorised by rote. It's also possible to create new spells and add to the grimoires; this is more advanced, though Nate is good at it. The table below sets out each school, along with the various kinds of spells that witches are able to learn:

Conjuration: "the performance of something supernatural by means of incantation or spell."

  • Elemental Control: Ability to create and control: fire, water, earth, air and electricity.
  • Teleportation: Instantaneous transport of a person or object over large distances.
  • Creation: Manipulation of matter to create objects or organisms.
  • Binding: Ability to trap a creature within a designated area.
  • Telekinesis: Ability to move objects with one's mind.
  • Chlorokinesis: Ability to influence and control plant systems.
  • Atmokinesis: Ability to influence and control weather systems.
Evocation: "the action of invoking a spirit or deity."

  • Necromancy: Ability to summon and control spirits of the dead.
  • Summoning: Ability to call forth extra-planar entities (e.g. spirits, demons, angels).
  • Banishing: Ability to release summoned extra-planar entities.
  • Exorcism: Ability to force an entity to relinquish control over a person or place.
  • Astral Projection: Ability to call forth one's own spirit and wander free from a physical body.
  • Mediumship: Ability to commune with spirits of the dead.
  • Resurrection: Ability to restore a dead person to life.
Divination: "the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means"

  • Augury: Method of predicting the future through examining the entrails of birds.
  • Astrology: Method of predicting the future through study of astral bodies.
  • Psychometry: Supernatural understanding of the history of a person or object through touch.
  • Scrying: Method of predicting the future through reflective surfaces.
  • Precognition: Method of experiencing possible futures through dreams or visions.
  • Dowsing: Method of locating persons, objects or places through crystals or rods.
Enchantment: "the enforcement of influence by supernatural means"

  • Charms: A spell which produces a dedicated, positive effect.
  • Curses:A spell which produces a dedicated, negative effect.
  • Compulsion: Ability to force obedience from a person through strength of will.
  • Memory Manipulation: Ability to alter or remove a person's memories.
  • Dream Walking: Ability to enter a person's dreams, or invite a person to share one's dreams.
  • Telepathy: Ability to read the thoughts of a person, or project one's thoughts into another mind.
Transmutation: "the action of changing or the state of being changed into another form"

  • Shape-changing: Ability to change the shape of a person, object or animal.
  • Alchemy: Ability to transform one material into another.
  • Reality Manipulation: Ability to alter and manipulate the status of one's reality.
Illusion: "an instance of a wrong or misinterpreted perception of a sensory experience"

  • Glamour: A spell which changes how an object or person is perceived through the senses.
  • Phantasm: A mental image seen by a dedicated person or group.
  • Shadow Magic: A projection of energy capable of producing effects in the physical world. Can take any shape.
  • Figments: A spell which produces a false sensation.
Abjuration: "the act of protecting from evil"

  • Warding: The creation of physical or magical barriers to protect a person, object or area.
  • Cleansing: The removal of negative energy from a person, object or area.
  • Healing: Curing of illness or regeneration of injury from a living creature.
  • Cloaking: Concealing a person or object so that they cannot be perceived through the senses.

Each of the schools has to be studied, and different witches will be more talented in certain areas than others. Nate has given some study to every school, which is unusual; most witches will focus on what is most useful to them. Nate is fascinated by magic in general. He has particular talent for the school of Enchantment, and is fond of creating charmed or cursed jewellery which he has pierced into his body to augment his skills. He's also very skilled at the schools of Illusion and Conjuration, which he initially used to perform magic on stage. He now more often uses them to fight off demons and other supernatural threats, which have become a problem following Ineroth's release from hell. By contrast, Nate is least talented at the school of Divination, which he finds confounding; spells involving telepathy are possible for him, but tend to come with painful side effects. He has put the least amount of energy into studying this school.

It should be noted that some magic is forbidden. In particular, formal learning in the school of Evocation is almost wholly forbidden, except to learn about its potential dangers. In his youth, Nate was fascinated by the idea of contacting otherworldly spirits, including spirits of the dead, and demons. He worked to study Evocation alone, learning forbidden techniques. This interest, and the knowledge it gave him, is how he was able to work the magic that led him to Ineroth in the first place, and so made him the author of most of his problems.

Tattoos: Nate is in the habit of creating charmed jewellery and tattoos, which magically enhance him without him needing to cast or maintain a spell. He has multiple body piercings due to this, though none of his charmed jewellery will come with him. He will set about making new ones in game. However, he will still have his charmed tattoos, of which two are notable. He has a tattoo which reduces his need to eat and to sleep, allowing him to work for longer without pause than an ordinary human - this is relevant to his monster form which is described below. He also has dozens of small, circular tattoos along his arms, especially his left arm. These teleport him to the various bubble dimensions he travelled through in Ineroth's realm. These circular tattoos will not work in game, per the power limitations below.

Game Limitations: In accordance with the game's power limitations, Nate will only be able to teleport within Rubilykskoye, and attempts to teleport trans-dimensionally will be unsuccessful. Additionally, he will not use his magic to harm or influence other characters without the other player's OOC permission, and I will have a permissions post set up for this purpose! In his canon world he has an empathic connection with the demon Thorn, which allows them to sense each other and communicate in their minds. This link will not operate while Nate is in game, unless Thorn should ever join him.
Curse Mark: Diabel, placed just beneath his left ear.

CHARACTERIZATION

FORMATIVE EXPERIENCES:
  • FIRST EVENT: - The young Nate uses magic to heal a classmate’s broken arm. His mother punishes him for it, wipes the memories of everyone involved and re-breaks the arm in front of Nate. This moment solidifies his rejection of his mother, and motivates his first rebellions against her will.

  • SECOND EVENT: - Nate leaves home and reveals his magic to the world, becoming a famous sorcerer. He moves to London with Anna, an empathic witch he’d befriended. He’s disowned by his family, but he finally has the freedom to indulge in the life he wants. His obsession with magic grows; he thinks this is the highest point in his life, the best version of himself that he could be, and he sees no danger in giving himself over to it.

  • THIRD EVENT: - When investigating a demonic disturbance picked up by Anna, Nate is pulled into hell, and the realm of the high demon Ineroth, the Prince of Gluttony. Nate is missing from Earth for five years, but for Nate, he’s in hell for much longer. He spends the first few years being tortured by Ineroth, who wants to strip his will away and consume his life force and magic. This happens when Nate is at the height of his hubris, and it crashes him down to the reality of the danger represented by Ineroth and his kind.

  • FOURTH EVENT: - Having escaped from Ineroth, Nate travels through hundreds of bubble dimensions in an attempt to find a way home. He encounters many trapped souls, whose energy Ineroth is draining until nothing remains. He frees as many of them as he can, but none are alive, until he meets Thorn, who has consciousness and personality. Nate thinks that he’s finally saved a soul before it’s gone. Thorn is his light in the darkness. He restores Nate's hope, saving him from despair and keeping him from going mad in isolation.

  • FIFTH EVENT: - Ineroth absorbs Thorn and Nate is returned to Earth. He’s desperate to save Thorn, and is willing to go to any extreme to do so. This event sets him on the path to eventually reconciling with his family, albeit now led by his sister. It is also the beginning of Nate’s determination to stay by Thorn’s side and not lose him again, which is his biggest motivator in the present day.

PHILOSOPHY: In Nate’s youth, his main motivator was his desire for freedom. He strongly believes that people should be able to live however they choose, and tends to dislike systems that prescribe otherwise. For example, he dislikes organised religion, since it imposes certain lifestyle structures upon its adherents. He has a particular dislike for arranged marriages, and any attempt to control whoa person shares their life with. Before his time in hell, these would have been the moral issues he would have talked about, had he been asked. He wouldn’t have pictured himself as an activist or a defender of anyone, despite having strong opinions that he refused to compromise in his own life. His time in hell changed this. When faced with entrapped souls of real people, he wanted to act to help them, and he did so, repeatedly. Having returned to Earth and witnessed the problems created by Ineroth’s escape, he is active in trying to save his world; he’s willing to fight demons personally, he strongly believes in the sanctity of life and wants to keep humanity safe. He feels actively responsible for making the world better, rather than just passively complaining about what’s wrong.

DESIRES: The main thing Nate wants right now is to repair the metaphysical damage done to his world by the demon Ineroth’s escape from hell. He also wants to ensure that Thorn, whose personality has been merged with Ineroth’s, can stay on Earth. Ineroth’s escape weakened the barriers between worlds, causing instability including storms of wild magic, an increase in creatures such as incubi, vampires and werewolves, and the appearance of creatures who belong in other realms. Nate wants to repair that chaos, not least because he feels responsible for it all. He is a focal point for the magical community, which looks to him for help and leadership. He is engrossed in study, desperate to find solutions. But he also wants a quiet life with Thorn. Thorn wants to become human; Nate wants to help him do it, and then stay with him. It’s a far cry from the life of fame and sorcery that Nate used to want, but he’s not that person anymore. He imagines living in obscurity with Thorn, and making his living through selling charmed jewellery and tattoos. At the moment, that goal seems very far away, and he tries not to think about it.

FEARS: Nate fears losing control of his life. He’s afraid of being trapped, and afraid of being constrained. He has a tendency to reject authority figures; he’s not exactly frightened of them, but he dislikes rules that he finds arbitrary and constraining. He’ll accept rules that he understands and agrees with, but not rules imposed on him by others. He’s also afraid of loss, and being separated from the people he loves the most; he’s determined not to let it happen again. That attitude plays into his fear of losing control. Nate would be entirely happy being surrounded by chaos, so long as that chaos was his own.

Nate also has trauma-based fears due to his time in Ineroth’s hell dimension. Shadow-based magic can provoke a panic response which he’s actively working to overcome, and overly crowded places tend to put him on edge because he spent a long time in relative isolation. That also means he doesn’t do well when left entirely alone, so it’s an internal struggle between wanting to be around people and feeling tense around too many people.

GAMEPLAY

SUITABILITY:  Nate is no stranger to magic, or to inter-dimensional travel. His goal will be to survive his time here, until he’s either able to teleport himself out, or his friends back home are able to save him, whichever happens first. As far as he’s concerned, he’s gotten out of a worse predicament than this, so he just has to live through it. That will be easier said than done. The younger Nate was very hedonistic, and he still has many of those impulses. He’s always had a high sex drive, and before his time in hell, he had multiple sexual partners and would never have entertained the idea of restricting himself to one. However, since then, his bond with Thorn is such that they are in a monogamous relationship, and Nate will initially want to hold to that. His monster form, however, will absolutely horrify him. It will remind him very strongly of Ineroth, and it will trigger his trauma from his time in hell. He will want to avoid becoming the monster at all costs, something that he’ll be very sure Thorn would understand.

He’ll also see others suffering around him. Just as he was unable to walk away from that in hell, so will he want to do something about it here. He’ll want to keep others from being hurt, he’ll want to keep them safe. This will be even more prevalent when he knows people enough to care about them personally. He’ll want to use his magic to help them, whether that means healing or fighting. He will have to confront his fears and his trauma, and he will have to reconcile his image of the person he used to be with the person he is now – something he has struggled to do since returning from hell. He will also be forced to make new friends and alliances, rather than relying on his own wits, or the small number of people he lets into his confidences back home. Whether his experiences here help him to heal from the trauma he has already, or just pile more on top of it, remains to be seen.

SAMPLE: TDM Top Level | CW: Nudity and PTSD/anxiety

MONSTER: CW: cannibalism, dub/non-con, body horror. Nate's monster form will be characterised by insatiable hunger, in every sense of the word. As the monster takes hold, it will display vampiric and eventually cannibalistic tendencies. This will play into Nate's fear of the demon Ineroth, who is associated with gluttony. The monster will have the following traits:
  • Long, pointed teeth, including excessively long canines, and too many teeth for its mouth
  • Large, bulging eyes which are extremely sensitive to light, but see perfectly in the dark. Its eyes glow in the dark
  • Hairless, with cold, white skin sagging away from long bones
  • It is easily wounded, bleeds profusely, and is prone to developing large, rotting sores which feeding on the flesh of others helps to heal
  • It's in a state of constant sexual arousal
The first signs of transformation will include a heightened desire for food and sex. He has a charmed tattoo that usually reduces his appetite for food; that magic will stop working, and he’ll increasingly have a hunger that no amount of food seems to fill.  He'll also start getting sensitive to light, and will have headaches and eye pain when he’s not in the shade. Physical changes will come next; he'll start to look pale, his fingers will elongate, his mouth will feel uncomfortable as his teeth lengthen and sharpen. Then, if he continues to abstain from sex, his hair will start to fall out, and he'll get taller. Then his skin will start to sag, and his teeth will grow too large for his mouth to close around them. He'll no longer be able to tolerate sunlight at all, and will start to avoid even minimal sources of light. His control over his appetites will gradually decrease as he changes, until eventually he won't be able to control them at all; he'll consume whatever food he sees (including the flesh and blood of sexual partners), and he'll acton every sexual impulse without pause. His monster will have no concept of stopping. It will take what it wants. (Note: this means the monster will have no concept of consent. I don't intend to play out non-con at all. I may play out elements of dub-con where it is discussed and agreed between players in advance. Nate is more likely to give in to his needs before it gets that far, because the idea of doing so will horrify him).
