Personality:
Nate is friendly and personable, and generally surrounds himself with people when he's not at home. As the youngest Hawthorne, he's more than happy to take a back seat to his brother and sister's influence-wrangling; he doesn't want that role anyway, he wants to avoid responsibility for as long as he can and keep getting better at magic. He loves the arcane, loves studying it and loves feeling magic flow through him. He finds magic as addictive as he does drugs and alcohol, and he'll play with all of them to excess. He has enough of a head on his shoulders to cover up the worst of those excesses, knowing his family are likely to put a lid on it and spoil his fun.

As for his family, that's a complicated story. In his heart of hearts, Nate loves them, and seeks their approval. That feeling is buried so deep he barely even recognises it. He feels like the black sheep of his family, feels that everything he likes is against their stifling rules. Also feeling unable to abide by those rules without losing sense of himself, Nate feels he can't both be himself and please his family. He feels strongly that his family don't care about him, and that what they do care about, they don't like. The exception to this is his sister Doe, who is in Nate's opinion, the only person who's ever loved him unconditionally.

As a general rule, he doesn't want anyone to know he's worried about that sort of thing. He acts like he's above it all, and openly breaks the family's rules, daring them to punish him. He gives nicknames to everyone, enjoys being the centre of attention and likes to think that he's funny. He keeps his more serious side for when there aren't other people around him, though he's prone to brooding when things don't go his way. He gives the impression of being at a complete loss as to what to do with his life, though in truth, he just knows that what he wants to do isn't what anyone around him would approve of. If you can't find him, he's probably locked in his room performing a ritual, or holed up in some lonely corner of the house, talking to ghosts.

He's fun-loving, sociable and theoretically kind, though he has no solid sense of morality. He both seeks to avoid the business and political side of family life, and wishes he could be more involved in his brother and sister's activities. Nate hates to be left out of anything, and has a tendency for sticking his nose where it doesn't belong because of it. If there's gossip floating around, he'll have heard of it - especially if it's about his siblings.

Trivia:

1. He's smarter than he acts. He'd be a straight A student if he applied himself. Instead he hovers around the B grade, and only tries hard when it comes to magic.
   
2. He's fascinated by other planes of existence. Ghosts, demons, spirits - you name it, he's tried to contact it.
   
3. He knows the house ghosts better than anyone: their full histories, how they died, what they miss. He thinks of them as family, and gets along with them better than most of his real family.
   
4. He makes it his personal mission to do things considered taboo. He'll bring others along with him if he can, especially humans.
   
5. His family are all about business, reputation, and legacy. Nate doesn't care about those things, and he rolls his eyes at his mother's talk of the family name.
   
6. He does care about his siblings as people, though, and he'd do anything for them. Just please don't make him wear a suit.
   
7. He claims to want to live 'a normal life', so long as that involves doing as much magic as he likes and not doing anything boring.
   
8. He has grand plans for his life, none of which match up with his family's expectations. He intends to leave home and make his own way in the world. He hasn't convinced himself to jump yet; he's too used to the comfort of privilege, and he doesn't want to leave his sister.

10. He's a born performer. Nate doesn't want to keep magic a secret, he wants to put it on show. He dreams of standing on a stage and showing off real magic, putting every street magician everywhere out of business.

Secrets:

1. He has a secret kink for being possessed, and has a habit of letting the family ghosts take over his body for a while. He's starting to experiment with demons, too.
   
2. He loves breaking the rules, especially when it comes to keeping his magic secret. He uses it to play with and tempt humans, in particular.
   
3. In fact he just loves playing with humans. He has multiple casual boys and girls that he's sexually involved with. His mother can never know.
   
4. He keeps a lid on how hard he tries with magic. Most of his spells and rituals are done in secret, and in general he doesn't want anyone else to know how much he knows. Especially his family.
   
5. He really looks up to his brother Theo. This is the biggest secret of all, since there'd be no living with him if he knew.
