It certainly makes it easier if you don't need another's green thumb.
Tradition. No one worships the Old Gods anymore. It's complicated to say more than that one them, but now Andrastianism is the prevailing religion in Thedas. For Satinalia, it's merely a case of the name changing to separate the association, but the tradition remained.
Am I right in assuming your version is 'crissmas?' it seemed the most popular holiday in the fleet, I'm going to guess it'll be the same here.
the tradition is yule, though. it's in december i've never really done with any sort of religion. christianity thinks witches ought to be burned at the stake, i'm not a fan
but yule's older than that. my family always made a public show of christmas, though.
christianity bastardised a lot of the old traditions
things like all the lights, decorating trees, hanging up things like holly and mistletoe, they stole all of that and they did it deliberately. christian invaders, way back in the day, smothered out the local religions and took over their traditions to help them bed in it's pretty messed up.
real yule is more about the natural world. especially how the sun moves it's centred around the winter solstice that's why there's so many lights. it's all about light. and we burn a yule log, in the hearth or on an altar. the christians stole that one, too, they'll burn it in the fireplace. or they'll make one out of chocolate and eat it after dinner.
so that they would look like the perfect, english aristocrats. godfearing, enviable, welcome in society. if people knew they had magic, they might guess how they were using it, how they were influencing them to fit their own narrative don't feel sorry for them. they knew exactly what they were doing.
Ah. Maleficar. You know, there's a tenant in Andrastianism that says 'Magic is meant to serve man, not rule over him.' I get the impression that wasn't the case for your family and, considering what kindness I've seen of you, I imagine you didn't get along.
I'm sorry, it's not my business and I've no expectation of you to talk about it if you don't want to. We can go back to talking of Yule instead?
it's ok. we didn't get on don't get on. except with my sister, we're close. i like the history behind yule it's what witches would've celebrated traditionally. i wouldn't say i worship any deity now
i mean i call on them sometimes, for magic, but that's more like an exchange i wouldn't worship my accountant, you know? and i really think of magic as more like, the energy between places, and people and things. more that than as, like, spiritual beings. they're a part of magic, but they're not all it is
anyway that's what yule's about, for me. recognising nature and what it means to us, and not. any other thing, really.
That makes sense. Besides, worship isn't for everyone, it only serves a purpose insofar as you need it to. The deity will still be what it is with or without you. In most cases I know, anyway.
For what it's worth, I think yule sounds much better than christmas and I hope you have people here you look forward to celebrating it with.
As hard as issues with family can -and often will continue to- be, there's something to be said for finding a better one elsewhere.

i like plants, but in the way that i have to, you know. wouldn't be much of a witch if i couldn't grow what i needed
do you worship the old gods, then? or is it more like a traditional thing

Ah, yes, I'm afraid Andrastianism as told by the Chantry isn't fond of my kind either. There've been a lot of abuses under the Chantry.
Is yule practiced differently than christmas?

I've heard of the lights and the tree and the mistletoe. The log is new. Yule sounds much nicer, honestly.
But you said your family made a show of christmas. To hide the magic in your lineage? Throw off suspicion, as it were.
