Name: Nathaniel Milo Atticus Hawthorne
Door: Per his last time in game, he's a Dominant!

Canon: Original
Canon Point: The moment when he tries to return to Hell with Thorn for the third time.

Age: 28. He looks like he's in his early 20s, but feels much older, due to time having worked differently while he was in Hell.
Appearance: He's average height and slender to the point of underweight. He has hazel eyes and brown hair that varies between close-cropped and shaggy, depending on how well he's taking are of himself at that moment. His style is in the punk goth zone, with lots of leather and plenty of necklaces and bracelets. His skin is a patchwork of tattoos, and he has a large number of facial, ear and body piercings. His magic has a purple energy signature; powerful spells will make his eyes glow purple. His pb is Thomas Dekker

History: Canon history is here
Nate was previously in game from April 2020 - October 2022 and I would intend for him to retain his memories of that time. A brief summary of his previous time in game is as follows:

  • Nate acclimated pretty quickly to Duplicity; he was hedonistic and pretty extraverted, and liked having newfound freedom from his family's control. He quickly made friends, and started selling charms made with magic to make money. In time, he bought property and established his first and main business, the Midnight Theatre. On weekdays, it would operate as a shop selling his charms, while at nights and weekends it was a working theatre with Nate and others performing on stage.
  • Nate generally disliked the Dom/Sub divide, despite feeling comfortable with his own designation. As a rule, his contract partners were usually lovers, though he would readily contract to friends as well. He always had a contract and always met quota without a problem, but he regularly broke the laws concerning same designation sex. Many of his lovers were other Dominants - that this was forbidden made it more appealing to him. This trend continued throughout his whole time in Duplicity, though at times he would be more covert about it than others.
  • One notable event involved Nate (and the rest of the LIERs) going to the Creator's House for a meal, which ended in them being locked inside for some time. During that event, Nate entered a room that forcibly changed him into a dragon. Like the others who entered such rooms, he was permanently changed and became a kind of weredragon afterwards, able to adopt the new form at will.
  • As time passed, and characters disappeared, Nate started to struggle with the loss of people he'd grown attached to, and this started to impact his emotional state. He was also severely impacted by his first in-game death, at Halloween 2020. This sent him into his first anxious spiral in Duplicity (though it would be far from his last). During his time in game he tried to deal with this trauma through substance abuse and talking therapy, but it never fully went away.
  • Eventually, his friendship with Dick Grayson influenced him to use his magic to try and keep others safe, especially in the Down. This drew Nate into some vigilantism for a time.
  • Loss and death became established triggers for him. Nate's mental health was never wonderful, but it worsened in Duplicity. He did maintain a positive 'face', always keeping the Theatre going and expanding into other businesses in support of his submissives. He had a public face and a private one.
  • In the spring of 2021, Nate reached a breaking point when Jason Todd used his magic to help murder a local drug lord. This sent Nate into a spiral, which worsened when of his closest friends and lovers, Nick Scratch, vanished from Duplicity. Feeling that he could no longer tolerate staying here, Nate brought together a group of witches and other allies, and made plans to try and escape from Duplicity. In November 2021, their plans culminated in a ritual that tried to open doors to other worlds. It failed, resulting only in opening viewpoints to hellish landscapes that traumatised everyone who saw them. Nate spent time in jail, and temporarily lost access to his magic after this attempt. More significantly, the aftermath saw him end some relationships (including his long-term contract with Stephen Day) and solidify others, depending on whether the others agreed with what he had done or not.
  • In the months that followed, Nate refocused his energies on trying to help and support Duplicity's more vulnerable residents during mod events times of crisis. He also tried to be less dependent on drugs and alcohol as coping mechanisms, and tried to process his trauma with proper medical help under Kyle Valenti's eye. It was somewhat successful.
  • In July 2022, Nate went through a significant canon update, which raised him to the age of 25 and saw him experience his detainment and torture in Hell, and his relationship with Thorn. The impact of this update was significant; Nate felt changed by what had happened. In Duplicity, the biggest change was that his death-related trauma was essentially gone, having been replaced by the impact of Hell. He had developed a certain level of discomfort around large crowds after having been used to the emptiness of Thorn's realm, and reminders of his 'before Hell' life made him dissociate somewhat. As a general rule, following the canon update Nate became more insular, less prone to seeking out new friendships and especially new sexual relationships - at this point he was intimate only with a small number of very close partners. He went out less, and stopped performing at the Midnight Theatre. It was harder for him to find enjoyment or fulfilment in the things he used to love.
  • He will now be two full Earth years on from that canon point, though he has struggled with the same feelings of dissociation and difficulty with acclimating back home. It has not helped that those two years have been fraught with volatile magic with Nate and his family at the centre; he hasn't had time to process everything that's happened to him, and he mainly feels tired, like there's a thousand problems he's expected to solve and he doesn't know how. He has also been monogamous with Thorn during that time. Acclimating to Duplicity's requirements is likely to prove challenging for him - though, at the very least, he'll be removed from the exhausting situation back home.

Personality:

Positive Trait: Determined. Nate is stubborn. Once he decides that there’s something he wants to do, some goal that he wants to achieve, then he’ll work towards it until it’s done. It doesn’t matter if the task is difficult, or even seems impossible; he’ll not be moved from it, and he’ll be determined to find a way through. He sees challenges as a puzzle that he can solve with enough work and application. He’s not the kind of person who’ll take the easy way out of a problem, or who’ll sit back and let events overtake him. When he wants something, he works for it, and he’ll not be moved from that desire. In his youth this manifested in his aspiration to be free of his family’s control and live a life of his own, indulging in all the magic he wanted. This wasn’t just an idle dream; Nate made active plans to make it a reality. His experience in Hell and the damage caused to magic through Thorn's freedom has shifted Nate's focus, since he feels he's responsible for what's happened. He's as determined to repair the broken balance of his world while still saving Thorn, and the weight of that responsibility is exhausting to him. Even so, he's determined to find the answer, and convinced that he will find it, with enough work and time. Nate is someone who makes plans and sees them through, and he puts hard work and graft into them. Though his goals in life have changed, he remains determined to achieve what he wants out of life, and he has no intention of letting any of what he wants go.

Negative Trait: Anarchic.  Nate has always strained against authority of any kind. He chafes under the strict control of his parents and the enforcement of the witching society's rules about magic. He feels like he can't be himself because of these rules, feeling that they restrict the development of his magical learning, as well as the general way in which he lives his life. He equally chafed under Duplicity's rules; why restrict himself to the confines of his designation? There's a reason why so many of his lovers were other Dominants. He reacts so much against authority that when he's told to do something he wants to do the opposite. He desperately wants the freedom to make his own choices, study magic as he pleases, have relationships with who he pleases, and get involved with what he pleases. His attitude is not as simple as not wanting to be controlled - he doesn't want there to be control. He craves the absence of it, and so seeks out places where the rules he knows have less power over him. He's attracted to danger and to people who others might think are bad influences on him. Anything that his parents would disapprove of appeals to him, even now that he's older, and if there is an opportunity for him to rebel against authority, he'll take it. He's also been known to take drugs, created by his own magic, to give himself a sense of liberation. Most dangerously of all, he uses the expansion of his magical ability as a means of achieving freedom. He deliberately studies the spells that are forbidden by his society, and steeps himself in arcane forces that carry grave danger to both his body and soul. Indeed, being possessed by spirits or demons serves as another addiction for him; to Nate, being possessed feels like the ultimate high, the best way for him to truly free his mind from the confines of his physical world. These tendencies are exactly what led him to get trapped in Thorn's realm in the first place, and they are why he is so often the author of his own problems.

Negative Trait: Reckless. Nate also has a tendency towards recklessness. He exhibits multiple risk-taking behaviours, notably in his attitude towards alcohol and drugs, which he indulges in freely and augments with his magic. He wants to increase his knowledge of and skill in all areas of magic, but the areas which his family have forbidden him from exploring have the most appeal to him. It doesn’t matter to him that those areas carry certain dangers along with them. Summoning demons could lead to him, or to another person (or multiple people) getting hurt, but he does it anyway. Letting ghosts and demons possess him is even more dangerous; he could be forced to do terrible things for which he could later be blamed, or even find himself permanently excised from his own body. Nate is not unaware of these risks – he always does his homework – but he doesn’t let them stop him. If anything, the greater the risk is, the more it appeals to him. He’ll take the high he gets from it, even if there’s less welcome consequences to deal with, too. His sense of danger is necessarily skewed by that attitude; he shows little practical care for his own safety, seeing risk and danger as something fun and not anything to be avoided. His time in Duplicity did little to change this trait, though it was certainly in evidence when he chose to try and create portals to force his way out. He was aware that it was a dangerous thing to attempt, he just thought that the risk was worth it. Despite the failure of that attempt, he still very much believes that he was right to try, since what's the alternative - lie down and accept his fate? Nate could never do that.

Negative Trait: Emotional. Nate has always strayed between extremes of emotions, and has some notable mental health issues. He struggles to control his emotions in general, but particularly when they are more negative emotions. He has a tendency to brood, and exhibits anxious and depressive behaviours. He also finds it hard to control his temper, and when something upsets him his mood will quickly escalate towards the dramatic. He’ll easily fly off the handle at someone who he thinks is being unfair, condescending, cruel or judgemental towards him. Much of this comes from being sensitive to what he perceives as the near constant disapproval of his family (minus his sister) towards him in childhood, and he responds badly to it. He’s generally surprised to find that others are on his side, and thus has a tendency to brood in silence and alone rather than share how he’s feeling with anyone else. All of this was evident during his first time in Duplicity, when his issues were exacerbated by the trauma caused by dying there. He also strongly suffered when people he'd been attached to disappeared. Prior to his time in Hell, he would often act out through drugs, alcohol, and sex, and he did this often in Duplicity. While some of those instincts remain, he is less dependent on substances than he used to be, since he grew accustomed to their unavailability in Hell. During his time there, his emotional instability was an asset; it was a world where time could not be tracked, he was never sure of what was real, and the entire realm seemed unstable. Nate learned to survive in that uncertainty. He would get injured but not die, his life was constantly under threat and he always survived. He was always running and always hiding, but he gained regular victories when he set souls free and escaped from Ineroth's clutches. His mind was just as chaotic the realm itself; it suited him. This is why being back in something more like reality is jarring for him, and he struggles with it. He has always been an emotional person - he struggles with anxiety and negativity, and he can get lost in them. However, he is better equipped to deal with trauma on the whole than he used to be. He does still tend to be drawn to like-minded people as friends, and thus his friends will often enable his bad behaviours rather than challenging them. It's worth noting that he tends not to stay friends with people who want him to behave or feel differently, since he'll automatically consider them to be 'against' him.

Powers and Abilities:

Nate is a witch! In his world, magic is accessible in different ways; there is magic through herbalism, which anyone with enough knowledge and experience can access, and there is magic that comes from an innate connection to spiritual energy. Nate comes from a long line of Hawthorne witches, whose innate connection to magic, and obsession with continuing that legacy through marriage, has made them an exceptionally powerful family. Because of this, Nate has a considerable amount of natural talent for magic, which he has furthered with his own obsessive study of his art.

The magic of his world is separated into seven different schools, into which various spells are categorised. There are common spells written down in family grimoires, which can be memorised by rote. It's also possible to create new spells and add to the grimoires; this is more advanced, though Nate is good at it. The table below sets out each school, along with the various kinds of spells that witches are able to learn:

Conjuration: "the performance of something supernatural by means of incantation or spell."

  • Mediumship: Ability to commune with spirits of the dead.
  • Resurrection: Ability to restore a dead person to life.

  • Dream Walking: Ability to enter a person's dreams, or invite a person to share one's dreams.
  • Telepathy: Ability to read the thoughts of a person, or project one's thoughts into another mind.
Transmutation: "the action of changing or the state of being changed into another form"

  • Shape-changing: Ability to change the shape of a person, object or animal.
  • Alchemy: Ability to transform one material into another.
  • Reality Manipulation: Ability to alter and manipulate the status of one's reality.
Illusion: "an instance of a wrong or misinterpreted perception of a sensory experience"

  • Glamour: A spell which changes how an object or person is perceived through the senses.
  • Phantasm: A mental image seen by a dedicated person or group.
  • Shadow Magic: A projection of energy capable of producing effects in the physical world. Can take any shape.
  • Figments: A spell which produces a false sensation.
Abjuration: "the act of protecting from evil"

  • Warding: The creation of physical or magical barriers to protect a person, object or area.
  • Cleansing: The removal of negative energy from a person, object or area.
  • Healing: Curing of illness or regeneration of injury from a living creature.
  • Cloaking: Concealing a person or object so that they cannot be perceived through the senses.

Each of the schools has to be studied, and different witches will be more talented in certain areas than others. Nate has given some study to every school, which is unusual; most witches will focus on what is most useful to them. Nate is fascinated by magic in general. He has particular talent for the school of Enchantment, and is fond of creating charmed or cursed jewellery which he has pierced into his body to augment his skills. He's also very skilled at the schools of Illusion and Conjuration, which he initially used to perform magic on stage. He now more often uses them to fight off demons and other supernatural threats, which have become a problem following Ineroth's release from hell. By contrast, Nate is least talented at the school of Divination, which he finds confounding; spells involving telepathy are possible for him, but tend to come with painful side effects. He has put the least amount of energy into studying this school.

It should be noted that some magic is forbidden. In particular, formal learning in the school of Evocation is almost wholly forbidden, except to learn about its potential dangers. In his youth, Nate was fascinated by the idea of contacting otherworldly spirits, including spirits of the dead, and demons. He worked to study Evocation alone, learning forbidden techniques. This interest, and the knowledge it gave him, is how he was able to work the magic that led him to Ineroth in the first place, and so made him the author of most of his problems.

Magical body mods: Nate is in the habit of creating charmed jewellery and tattoos, which magically enhance him without him needing to cast or maintain a spell. He has multiple body piercings and tattoos due to this. He has a tattoo which reduces his need to eat and to sleep, allowing him to work for longer without pause than an ordinary human. He also has dozens of small, circular tattoos along his arms, especially his left arm. These teleport him to the various bubble dimensions he travelled through in Ineroth's realm. These circular tattoos will not work in game, per the nerfs below.

Dragon form: Thanks to a previous mod event in Duplicity, Nate is technically also a weredragon and can change into his dragon form at will, though with considerable pain. His dragon form has a long, sleek look, and is 7ft tall and 14ft long (from nose to tip of tail). He's able to speak and cast spells as normal in this form. He also has a breath weapon which manifests as a cone, burst or blade of pure magical energy, in a brilliant purple colour, a bit brighter than his scales. It looks like this.

Game Limitations: In accordance with the game's power limitations, Nate will only be able to teleport within Duplicity, and attempts to teleport trans-dimensionally will be unsuccessful. Any magical connection to his world or the people in it would be blocked, nullified, or unable to connect in the first place. He also won't be able to summon anything or anyone to Duplicity, or banish anyone or anything from it. His magic will also not be able to undo the effects of game events, unless the event allows for that. Additionally, he will not use his magic to harm or influence other characters without the other player's OOC permission, and I will have a permissions post set up for this purpose. In his canon world he has an empathic link with the demon Thorn, which allows them to sense each other and communicate in their minds. This link would only operate if both of them were in game.

Inventory
  1. His personal grimoire
  2. A charmed necklace that has a (blocked) psychic connection to his sister
  3. Thorn's favourite leather jacket.

Samples: Test drive top level, including both thinking and talking. Here's a second just in case!
